MAYDAY 2010 RARE Productions on the Lake Stage!!

MayDay!

The 2010 MayDay Parade and Festival will be held on Sunday, May 2.

In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre’s annual MayDay Parade, Ceremony, and Festival has been a vibrant example of art as community building in the Twin Cities area for 36 years.

For many in Minnesota, the MayDay Parade is a time to celebrate the coming warmth with hand-built puppets and masks (some over 10 feet tall), music, and performance in the street. But the essence of the parade is rooted in the local community and contemporary issues, concerns, and visions for a better world.  By the time the parade unfolds on the first Sunday of May, more than 50,000 people from near and far fill the streets both as participants and spectators for this day of celebration and community.
1 pm: Parade begins at the corner of 25th Street East and Bloomington Avenue South, and travels south on Bloomington to 34th Street East, where the parade turns west towards Powderhorn Park, where the parade ends and the MayDay Ceremony and Festival begins, at approximately 3pm.
Artisit will begin performing after the ceremony appoximately 4pm

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Power to the People (P2P) started as a community building activity of Minnesota Men of Color (MMOC) beginning in FY 2001. P2P was created to provide visibility and connectedness to people of color within a predominantly white LGBT celebration.  P2P was a united effort of over 30 organizations and 25 artists, to: 1) ensure LGBT people of color (POC) had a way to connect to each other, have culturally relevant entertainment and resources and 2) begin to break down the barriers of homophobia in cultural agencies, during Twin Cities Pride.  P2P reached over 3,000 people during its first 2 day event, over 80% of those being People of Color.
